Robert Caulfield Graduate Research Scholarship 2025 – Victorian Chapter, Australian Institute of Architects
The Robert Caulfield Graduate Research Scholarship is awarded annually by the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects to recognise and encourage individual architectural research that enhances the profession’s value to the wider community.
The scholarship is presented to the most compelling proposal critically investigating a relevant topic related to the advancement of architecture and the profession’s role in society. Cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.
The research must be completed within 12 months of the scholarship being awarded.

The winner will be announced at the Victorian Chapter End-of-Year Gala, which celebrates member achievements including the presentation of the Robert Caulfield Graduate Research Scholarship, Graduate Prize, and Student Ideas Prize.
The completed research project will be promoted through the Institute’s publications, social media platforms, newsletters, and official website.
About Robert Caulfield LFRAIA
The scholarship is made possible through the generous donation of Robert Caulfield LFRAIA, whose international architecture career began after receiving two Institute research scholarships — the KA Henderson Scholarship and the Sisalation Scholarship.
Robert strongly believes that scholarships are vital in helping young architects develop their careers.
The Foundation of the Australian Institute of Architects, a registered charity, manages the scholarship fund. All donations are dedicated to philanthropic initiatives that promote and celebrate Australian architecture.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Reside in Victoria and be a member of the Victorian Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN)
Be within 15 years of graduating from an AACA-accredited Master of Architecture degree (or equivalent) OR have been first registered as an Architect in Australia within the past 10 years
Meet the requirements individually or in joint submissions (up to two participants), with both meeting the eligibility criteria
Scholarship Benefits
The 2025 scholarship recipient will receive:
$10,000 funding
Certificate of achievement
One year of Institute membership (redeemable within two years)
Two tickets to the Victorian Chapter End-of-Year Gala
Additional Opportunities:
The Victorian Chapter will seek to connect recipients with industry stakeholders to provide platforms for presenting their research.
Submission Requirements
Research Proposal Document including:
Research proposal title
Synopsis (maximum 500 words) outlining the purpose and intent
Proposed format for the final deliverable(s)
Applicant’s name and contact details
Video Proposal Presentation (1–2 minutes)
Proof of Eligibility including:
Institute of Architects Membership Number
Graduation and/or registration dates
Completed Project Requirements
Project outcomes must be in a publication-ready format
Key findings must be presented at an Institute forum within 12 months of receiving the scholarship
A 30–60 minute formal presentation of findings must be delivered to an Institute forum
The Institute will hold rights to promote the research, with proper acknowledgement given to the recipient
Judging Process
An independent judging panel of industry professionals will assess proposals based on:
Clarity of methodology and intent
Innovation and potential for implementation
Relevance to current and future architectural issues
Contribution to interdisciplinary architectural practice
Real-world applicability of the research
Panel Composition:
Victorian Chapter Representative (Chair, casting vote in a tie)
National Council Representative (academic)
Victorian Chapter Representative from the Practice of Architecture Committee
Donor Representative (industry/community)
